This manual is made possible under a contract with the Legal Services Corporation for New Attorney Training and Supports Related to Poverty Law Research. The contract supports, besides this manual, the training of new attorneys in ten states selected by LSC and a free one-year subscription to CLEARINGHOUSE REVIEW for all attorneys who have been working for LSC-funded programs for less than three years. We are grateful to LSC for its recognition of the importance of training the next generation of poverty lawyers.
We also wish to express appreciation to advocates who helped us plan this manual and bring it to fruition. They are Jacqui Bowman (Greater Boston Legal Services), Ilsa Branch (Bay Area Legal Aid), Sara Campos (National Immigration Law Center), Rosemary French (Benchmark Institute), Alan W. Houseman, (Center for Law and Social Policy), Lisa Krisher (Georgia Legal Services), Kate Mitchell (Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago), Laura Diaz Moore (Northwest Justice Project), Cynthia Schneider (Legal Services Corporation), Diana White (Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago), and Margaret Stapleton and Wendy Pollack (National Center on Poverty Law). Their insight and advice proved invaluable.
Finally, our profound thanks to those who took time from busy schedules to write the articles in this manual. We find remarkable the depth and breadth of their knowledge, and we are indebted to them for their willingness to share their expertise.
